JOB TITLE: Medication History Technician LOCATION: Geisinger Community Medical Center DEPARTMENT: Enterprise Pharmacy WORK SCHEDULE: Days/Evenings WORK TYPE: Full Time
JOB SUMMARY: Under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist, the medication history technician will obtain and update the patient’s medication history information in the electronic health record (EHR). This is accomplished by interviewing the patient and/or caregiver, along with obtaining information from other trusted sources such as pharmacies, physician offices, etc. The Medication History Technician must successfully complete an internal training program and be able to demonstrate proficiency in the areas of mediation identification and documentation and thoroughness in completion of an accurate medication history. The Medication History Technician performs duties to support the goals and objectives of the Medical Center in its efforts to provide quality pharmaceutical care and patient satisfaction.
Reports directly to the supervising Emergency Department Pharmacist, if assigned, or other designated supervisor based on employed location.
COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS: Demonstrates the ability to communicate effectively and follow instructions.
Demonstrates a working knowledge of medical terminology and pharmaceutical and/or chemical nomenclature.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: High school diploma or GED required.
Graduate of a Pharmacy Technician Program or other Medical training preferred
Minimum 1 year experience in retail pharmacy working as a pharmacy technician preferred.
Once Hired:
Fulfills the new employee orientation and achieves internal department certification to work in assigned area including successfully completing Geisinger Medication History Training (3-4 weeks) prior to assuming job responsibilities
Must register and pass national technician certification exam within first year of employment, with, if necessary, consideration provided for up to two additional attempts due to a previous failure.
If additional attempts to pass are necessary, registration and additional attempt to pass must happen within 6 months of the previous attempt. Failure to obtain certification after three attempts would result in a termination.
Must complete all assigned pharmacy technician competencies as assigned annually.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Must have the ability to accommodate a flexible schedule of rotating shifts and the ability to stand or walk for an entire 8 or 10- hour shift. Must be able to work overtime, when needed, according to the department’s overtime practices.
