This position is responsible for using technology solutions to improve the medication use process and help maximize medication safety, efficacy, and cost-effectiveness at Banner. This includes development and maintenance of existing and emerging clinical decision support technology tools and their associated measurable; the collection, analysis, and internal/external presentation of data associated with medication-use initiatives; and evaluation of pharmacoeconomic outcomes data pursuant to formulary decisions.
Leads system-wide initiatives that leverage Cerner applications to optimize the safe and effective use of medication therapies and to identify areas for potential cost savings in the medication-use process. Oversees clinical and technical aspects of existing and emerging clinical decision-support programs. Uses internal and external data to evaluate current medication-use practices and identify potential areas of improvement and cost savings. Interfaces with providers, pharmacists, nurses, IT personnel, and facility/corporate leadership to ensure optimal use of clinical decision support technology. Maintains and updates Discern rule database, Multum drug interaction and dose-range checking functionality, and Discern documentation website.
Provides oversight for the development of clinical decision support and formulary-management technology solutions as the organization transitions towards an ACO model and further integrates inpatient and outpatient patient care practices. Works closely with physician informaticists and IT personnel to develop technology solutions to maximize patient outcomes and cost-effectiveness of medication therapy throughout the continuum of care.
In collaboration with key stakeholders, provides expertise regarding the clinical content incorporated into medication-related technology and automation across the continuum of care. This includes Cerner and non-Cerner applications and technology. Ensures such technology is consistent with the system-wide formulary and supports the safe, efficacious, and cost-effective use of medications.
Works collaboratively with the System Clinical Pharmacy Program Director and the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Clinical Consensus Group to systematically review medication therapies in an effort to determine their formulary status and most cost-effective use for the system. This work is guided by sound literature evaluation principles with an eye on medication safety, efficacy, and pharmacoeconomic outcomes.
Collects, analyzes, and disseminates data from programs designed to improve the medication-use process at Banner. Presents information internally to facility and corporate leadership and workgroups, as appropriate. Presents information externally via invited presentations and peer-reviewed publications to support the establishment of Banner Health as an industry leader.
Serves as a drug information resource for the system in the areas of clinical decision support systems, adverse drug event prevention, and pharmacoeconomic outcomes of medication therapies. Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks, and participating in professional societies.
Requires a degree in Pharmacy from an accredited College of Pharmacy. Requires PGY1 residency or equivalent experience.
Requires current pharmacy licensure in the state of practice within 90 days of hire.
Requires at least 5 years of experience in healthcare. Requires a working knowledge of the scope and use of clinical decision-support applications as they relate to key target customers: providers, pharmacists, nurses, and facilities. Must have strong communication, presentation, and leadership skills as well as the ability to lead multidisciplinary teams or workgroups. Must have a strong background in clinical pharmacy, drug information, information technology, and pharmacoeconomics. Must have the ability to collect, analyze, and present data from a variety of sources to facilitate continuous improvements in medication safety, cost-savings, and pharmacoeconomic initiatives. Must have experience disseminating knowledge obtained from medication-process improvement initiatives (e.g., oral presentations, written manuscripts submitted for publication).
Doctor of Pharmacy or Masters / PhD in pharmacy-related area. PGY2 residency, post-graduate fellowship in pharmacoeconomics, board certification by Board of Pharmaceutical Specialties.
Additional related education and/or experience preferred.
